DIABETES INCREASES IN AREAS OF HIGH POLLUTION

The rate of diabetes in highly industrialized areas like Detroit and Windsor are 44% higher in
men and 41% higher in women. Pollutants like PCBs, nitrates, nitrites and N-nitroso compounds
have all been linked with juvenile diabetes (type I). According to an article published in
the Windsor Star on October 6, 2000 - p A3, "women with diabetes have PCB levels 30%
       higher than women without diabetes".

Other pollutants like dioxin and arsenic has been linked to diabetes mellitus (type II) ...
especially dioxin. Bleaching paper with chlorine-based compounds release this extremely toxic
chemical into water, air and food ... this is why pulp and paper mill workers have higher
rates of type II diabetes ... also, dry cleaners and chemical workers have higher rates.
