THYROID DISEASE IN WOMEN INCREASES IN AREAS OF HIGH POLLUTION

Pollution may be a major contributing factor in the high incidence that plagues the industrial regions of the Midwestern U.S. and Canada.

According to an article published in the Windsor Star on October 6, 2000 (page A3) ... women of all ages contract thyroid disease at an abnormally high rate in these areas ... however, there is a staggering 25% increase in those who are between birth and age 24. The article goes on to say that chemicals like PCBs and dioxin have been linked to thyroid disease.

Also, there appears to be a large body of evidence showing that areas with abnormally high incidences of thyroid disease (in women) also have children who develop neurological problems ... since the thyroid affects cell growth and brain function.
