ONE-TWO PUNCH DEALS BLOW TO CANCER TUMORS . . . CANWEST News Service - Windsor Star - 18 Mar 2004 by Joseph Patrick Jakubal McGill University scientists collaborated with American researchers to discover that tumors were eliminated in mice that received two drugs in combination ... the antibiotic rapamycin and the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin. The experiment was conducted on white mice that had B-cell lymphoma (the type associated with leukemia and lymph node cancer). When the pharmaceuticals were applied, the tumors disappeared completely and dramatically --- OVERNIGHT! ... plus, they stayed away for 3-4 months (a long time in the life span of a mouse). It is interesting to note that the drugs did not work at all when used alone. It seems that the antibiotic "prepared" the cancer cells for elimination by the chemotherapy ... in other words, it made them vulnerable to the chemo. The explanation given was --- these types of cancer cells have a genetic "difference" that allows them to resist chemotherapy, and the one-two punch targets this "difference".
